Baby shopping!

There are a few things more fun than expecting your first baby and shopping for the new arrival. There are endless lists of what you’ll need for your family member and I bought it all. The lists are not entirely useless but here are a few tips and tricks how to make your purchases count, what to invest in and how you can save a bit of money here and there.

Naturally, you’ll need diapers and wet wipes – a lot of them. Make sure to follow special promotions in stores and really stock up when you find a good deal – diapers and wet wipes don’t go bad so you’ll use them up and getting them 25 or 30 % off means a lot of saved cash in the long run. We use Bambo diapers now but for size 1, I preferred Pampers which have a strip in the front which changes color once the diaper is wet, making it easier to keep track. For wet wipes, our favorite are To-to from Tosama.

Plenice in mokre robčke boš seveda potrebovala, in to veliko njih.

Also on the topic – you will need cloth diapers (tetra diapers), but you sure don’t need 30 as some of these lists suggest. We went through 3-4 per day. Since the baby doesn’t own tons of clothes, you’ll be doing laundry every three or four days as it is, meaning that about 15 cloth diapers should be more than enough. Remember to put one (just folded in half) under your baby’s head when they sleep – they tend to spit up the milk and drool, so this will prevent you from washing the sheets every day.

If you decide to go with pacifiers (some moms don’t) – get some before the baby is born and take them to the hospital with you. Soothing a crying baby when you’re still recovering from birth isn’t easy and a pacifier sure can help with that. There are different pacifiers for different ages, so don’t buy too many in the beginning as you’ll be getting different ones every 5-6 months.

See this personal care set in the right of the photo? I’d say skip buying something like this since you won’t use most of the stuff anyway. What you do need are some miniature nail clippers and a good nose aspirator – we bought those extra and I haven’t used a single thing out of this set in the last year.

Until a certain age, baby has no use for toys. Little M first showed interest in toys at about three months of age, but those were the toys on his playing mat. Also, expect to get plenty of toys and stuffed animals from your friends and family once you have your baby, so I’d skip on buying them. I would however recommend Sophie the Giraffe – our little man has been munching on it since he was about four months old (he cut his first tooth at nine months, but still enjoyed rubbing his gums beforehand) and continues to do it until this day. It seems like a good investment. In the photo you can also spot his white fuzzy rabbit from Mali zakladi – this is his snuggle toy with which he loves to cuddle and will also be taking it to the kindergarten.

Once you visit your baby’s pediatrician for the first time, you’ll receive a prescription for Vitamin D3 drops. In my personal experience, those drops are not very good and also caused a lot of stomach cramps for our little boy in the two weeks we were using them. After we switched to Waya D3 Probiotic drops (about 13€ from the pharmacy without prescription), his pain and cramps disappeared completely. We go through a bottle of these per month and I think they are totally worth every cent.

You’ll be needing these little bottles of saline fluid all the time. In the first days, you’ll need them to clean out the belly button and afterwards, they’ll come in handy for cleaning out a stuffed nose. I buy them in bulk since they are much cheaper that way. You can also get a whole bottle of saline fluid but I think that these little ones are much more sterile.

As far as creams and lotions go, I could probably get a master’s degree since I’ve studied and tried them all. Baby M has really good skin but gets dry spots. Our favorite cream for the whole body is Dr. Pasha 100 % natural cream (about 5€ in DM, we go through three of these per month, so you’d probably need one for a newborn). Whatever you choose to go for, remember to look for products that are without parabens, sulfates, mineral oils and perfumes. We’ve also had good experience with products from Trudi, Weleda and Mustella.

Last but not least, let’s talk technology. Since the day I found out I was pregnant, I was determined to get the Angel Care system. Little M sleeps in his bed in his room since day one – I am not in favor of co-sleeping (for different reasons) so I wanted to make sure that I had some control over what’s happening in his room during sleep. This system also has the sensory pads which sound an alarm if the baby is not breathing. It does not prevent SIDS (if you’re pregnant, don’t read too much about that as it will only make you nervous) but really young babies sometimes sleep so deeply that they forget to breathe and need to be gently reminded (by tickling or gently breathing into their face) to do so. We only had it happen twice and M. would probably start breathing on his own again, but as far as I’m concerned, Angel care gives me a peace of mind.

Last up is a good thermometer. These digital thermometers can be an investment, but in my opinion, they are worth it. You can use them for measuring body temperature, bath water, food temperature and such. I whip it out at least twice a day! If you invest in a good one, you’ll probably be able to use it for a decade or so making it an investment worthwhile.

Vsekakor ti priporočam, da investiraš v dober digitalni termometer. Jaz našega gotovo uporabim vsaj dvakrat dnevno – z njim merimo temperaturo malega in naju, temperaturo vode v banji, flaške, hrane, skratka uporabljamo ga ves čas.

I hope this is helpful and you’ll be able to make some good decisions if you’re expecting a new family member. Let me know if there’s anything else you’re considering buying and would like an opinion on it – chances are, I bought it as well 😉 Also, would you like another post about what to take to the hospital, or one about how to handle the first days at home? Until next time, stay beautiful.

Do naslednjič, ostani čudovita!

Super objava. Ceprav imam jaz cisto drugacno izkusnjo s tetra plenicami. 😉
