Products I regret buying

I’m sure you all know the feeling when you walk into a store, see this one, shiny, new make-up or beauty item and immediately fall in love with it. Of course it’s coming home with you. You are super excited about it and can’t wait to try it out properly.

So you go into the bathroom and put it on your face or your body and immediately, you are disappointed. You contemplate throwing the product away, but at the same time you also feel the need to use it, since you already spent good money on it, right? Well, below are some products I feel that way about. A word of warning though – these are products that I don’t like or don’t work for me personally, but might work for you. So just some honest opinions, really.

I’ll just quickly mention the Avon Nail polish drying spray. It’s icky, it’s oily and it my opinion, it doesn’t perform. So it’s going straight in the bin. If you want to read more about it, click here.

Next up, we have the Aldo Vandini hydrating face mask with hyaluronic acid and caviar. Sounds great, right? Well, this thing isn’t exactly cheap for a single use product, I think it’s about 1 € (you get two in one packet for about 2 €). But besides that, my skin reaction to this mask was horrible. I felt a tingling sensation when I was putting it on and after the specified ten minutes when I took it off, my face was none the same but for the weird red patches on different areas. I will be throwing this remaining packet away.

Being an Argan addict, I was really happy when I spotted the Dvorec Trebnik argan ointment in the store. Mind you, the price was again quite high, I think it cost about 7 €. It’s a nice product overall, but it is just way too oily to be suitable for someone like me who is always busy with something. I simply don’t have the luxury of putting this on my hands and then sitting around for hours. I’m not sure what I’ll do with this, maybe give it to my grandmother 🙂 View Post

Avon shopping haul

This is a story about changing the perspective, or better said, perception of a brand. Until recently I always thought of Avon as a brand for older ladies who prefer to buy make-up and cosmetics out of the comfort of their own home. But then I stumbled upon their leave-in conditioner a couple of years back when I went on vacation without any and borrowed it from a friend. And guess what? I absolutely loved it! And a couple of weeks later I learned another piece of information – my mother-in-law is actually an “Avon lady”.

And yes, I started using a number of hair and body products from Avon but remained hesitant when it came to make-up. But again – I dove right in and this is the mini Avon haul from last week.

First up, I picked up a scented body spritz called Vibrant (orchid and blueberry). It has a very distinctive smell of alcohol when you first apply it but turns into a nice flowery smell afterwards. Being a body mist, it doesn’t last that long, so make sure you apply it right before you want to be smelling good. I found it especially refreshing during the last few warmer days when I needed to freshen up.

The story is similar with the Sparkly Citrus Eau de toilette. It has a verystrong citrusy smell in the beginning but it fades out quickly – on my skin, it only lasts about 2-3 hours. It would be a nice purse bottle if it only came with a cap. But it doesn’t so it’s impossible to carry around. This is also a negative from the aesthetical point of view – it doesn’t look very nice next to my other perfume bottles, so I will not be making a repeat purchase. I will be trying the Parisian Chic Eau de Perfume though, because the tester they sent me smells absolutely beautiful – it’s more of a flowery smell (to me, it smells like raspberries and roses), but I still think this could be my fall/winter smell for when I’m feeling a bit down. Do you have a pick-me-up scent?

Very late August favorites

I have been feeling under the weather so much lately that my blog also suffered from it. However, I am feeling really productive today so hopefully things will get better. Does the weather affect you as well?

Anyway, it’s time for the much overdue August favorites. As you can see, it’s been a very nail oriented month, especially because I spent some of it at the seaside and we all know what sea and sand and being all-around crazy will do to your nails…

Two of these I actually picked up in the USA – the OPI »I’m not really a Waitress« (BTW, the names of OPI polishes crack me up, I spent a good ten minutes just reading them and laughing out loud, which is much less unusual in America as it would be at our local DM store). Unlike most nail polishes, this one actually comes across a bit darker than I would have imagined, but that’s OK, because it will be a pretty fall color as well. I love the consistency (it’s my first OPI and I didn’t know what to expect), but above all I love that it actually lasts more than 2 days on my nails. So, favorite it is. View Post

Low maintenance – really?

Yesterday, my significant other watched me put on make-up from start to finish while he was taking a shower. When I was done he was utterly amused by the fact that I am writing my blog under the »low-maintenance beauty« name. Because, in his words, I’m anything but. And you know what? After reviewing my morning routine I realized he is right. What I want to know from you is if you find the bottom list something normal – something you do as well – or am I taking it a step too far?

This is the list of everything I put on yesterday + all the tools I used for application in the exact order I use them.

  • moisturizer (Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel) and lipbalm (EOS)
  • face primer (Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser) + fingers
  • eye primer (Too Faced Shadow Insurance) + fingers
  • liquid foundation (Rimmel Match Perfection) + Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge
  • compact powder (Bourjois Healthy Balance) + BH Cosmetics Powder Brush
  • light concealer (Make Up Revolution Concealer) + Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge
  • under-eye concealer (Instant Age Rewind Concealer) + Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge
  • bronzer (Tarte Mineral Bronze Powder) + Ecotools powder brush
  • blush (NYX Blush in Pinched) + BH Cosmetics Blush Brush

  • eyebrow powder (NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder) + brush that comes with it
  • eyebrow gel (Essence Lash and Brow gel)
  • eyeshadow (Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette) + 3 BH Cosmetics eyeshadow brushes for application and blending
  • eyelash curler (no idea of the brand, picked it up at Walmart for a few $)
  • mascara (1 coat of Maybelline Volum Express Colossal Mascara + 1 coat of Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara)
  • eyeliner (Maybelline Master Precise liquid eyeliner)
  • lip liner (Uma Cosmetics)
  • lipstick (Barry M)
  • setting spray (e.l.f. Make-up Mist & Set)

Total? 19 products and 9 tools.

I’ll be the first to admit that this is a full face of make-up, although I apply it in a way that is still appropriate for daytime. I mainly separate daytime and night time looks by the amount of contouring and the darkness of the eyeshadow – there is probably some other things that could also be taken into account? How do you change your daytime/night-time make-up?

At the moment, putting this on takes me a good 15 minutes, which is a ridiculous amount of time. I hope to get a bit faster eventually, but so far it is what it is. What I will say though is that I absolutely love the mornings now because every day I get to play around with make-up and try something new, which is something I never did before.

What is your favorite part of mornings?

Office must-have products

There are not many things I need in my office to keep me happy throughout the day. Actually, there are just 6 staples that are always, always somewhere around when I need them.

1) A glass of water in a cute mug because I forget to drink when I’m busy and therefore need a constant reminder.

2) A handcream – currently the Yummy coconut hand cream which I just ordered from Click2chic. It has a beautiful summery smell to it and although it takes some time to absorb I really feel like it’s doing the work.
3) Guarana Natural energy vials by Medex – these give me a kick when I’m feeling under the weather/have not slept enough/am burnt out. These vials are just a natural burst of energy and very convenient to use as well. Otherwise, Medex is one of my favorite Slovenian brands of all times – they have so many great natural products in different categories, which include many cosmetic products.
4) Tissues. Any tissues will do, but I prefer Kleenex because I find them the softest.
5) Antibacterial gel because let’s be honest – our office space isn’t exactly the most hygienic around. The keyboard, computer mouse and telephone themselves carry so many nasties that I find it absolutely imperative to use this gel several times a day. Right now, I’m using the Bath & Bodyworks gel in vanilla – berry sorbet, but normally I have the *24 gel which is easily available in Slovenia.
6) A lipbalm. I am in love with my eos lipbalms. They are so easy to carry around since they won’t open and get any filth in them. The flavors are fantastic and they really keep my otherwise very chapped lips under hydrated.
